José Hernández is an astronaut who served as a mission specialist on the STS-128 mission to the International Space Station in 2009. He was the first Latino migrant farmworker to journey to space. His story is one of persistence, determination, and staying true to your dreams no matter how big they are.

José has written a memoir, an autobiographical picture book, and his story is now depicted in the movie A Million Miles Away (released in 2023). This learning guide will supplement any/all of these resources, and invite kids to make personal connections to the themes of José’s story.

This guide can be easily adapted and is appropriate for any age or grade level.
