Unit Study: Tending Our Roots
Tending Our Roots is a 3-part unit study geared toward any parent, educator, or grown up who wants to literally and metaphorically help kids dig through their own roots to find strength and resilience, while at the same time literally and metaphorically uprooting and transplanting some of the harmful “rooted” patterns that no longer serve them today. Tending Our Roots gives kids and their grown ups a guide for exploring their own roots, connections to the past, generational cycles, and how they can be empowered to liberate their own future. It includes experiential activities like gardening, learning the science of roots and what they do for a plant, and integrates the arts and various books/media to explore the concept of their own personal and collective roots that impact them right now.
Core Concepts
Experiential Gardening Skills
Science of Roots, Observation, Compare/Contrast
Exploration of Generational “Roots” and Cycles through Books and Media
Nurturing New Growth in the Garden and Ourselves through Goal Setting
**Tending our Roots concepts are easily adaptable across a wide range of ages from PreK -High School, and can be delivered in an individual or group setting. However, activities and resources as written are most appropriate for Elementary ages.
